ID Challenge No.9 (21-24 Nov 18)

Post by thefiggis »

What ho,

Something different this time - an artefact from Le Musee de Sweepstick47, for which many thanks.

This item was found on a site in Yorkshire known to have been occupied by Romans/Saxons. It's been in a box since the 1980s but SS has been kind enough to blow the dust off it to see if anyone knows what it is. For the record, he doesn't know and it's never been formally identified.

ID challenge form HERE

Closes Saturday, 24th November after 5pm.

Good luck, and let's see if you can put the poor chap out of his misery ::g

First now I actually realize what the ID challenge is about..
So for Erics "SS" find, it must be a guess towards a medieval harness pendant. I was first looking towards platecross, but harness pendant it must be..
XP DEUS. GPP VII. GARMIN etrex 20.

I'll go for a harness pendant / mount - circa C13 - 14, Broken at the bottom.

Interesting replies, with harness pendant leading the way. There's one reply which reflects what SS47 was leaning towards and I expect he'll be along later to have a word.

Many thanks as usual to all who had a stab ::g

Many thanks to all who have participated in identifying this item ::g Found during the 80's in North Yorkshire with my old Arado 130. At that time, identifying finds meant a trip to the local reference library to pore over whatever books and maps were available but the curator of the local museum was very helpful and would willingly identify the more routine finds, anything more exotic was sent to the British Museum. This find was one of those seen by the local museum and suggested to be a Roman Pendant Mirror.

As a result of the help experienced here and the suggestions that have been posted, I'm now firmly in the camp of the Early Medieval harness Pendant and I'll be happy to reflect it as such in my records. Thanks again and Good Luck identifying more items in future competitions.
Regards ss47 ::g
