Metal Detector Ace 250 advice

Post by Zach » Mon Apr 29, 2019 7:50 pm

Hi to anyone reading 😀

I am 17 years old and I started metal detecting when I was in my late 15th year and I have been detecting on my grandparents land every time I go down (which is a lot). They have 3 smallish gardens but a 0.5 acre I think orchard. Whenever I detect I use my Ace 250 with the standard coil and now I am finding that it is very quiet, I almost think I have dug everything up (but not the trashy iron and foil targets as it has given me hope of showing a silver but then I pull out a can!)
I am considering buying a Nel Tornado cool as I’ve heard it can detect deeper and so MAYBE I can find some new items.

Do you think I should? Or nah?

Zach

Hi Zach
One piece of advice i can give you is dig all foil signals
They could very well be silver hammered coinage
Dont be put off by the amount you dig, we all do it
I have never deliberately ignored a silver foil or tin foil signal, never

Sadly then it may be a fair few years before you find your first hammered coin, or even your first Roman coin

if i am to be honest
You are quite new to the hobby, you have chosen an excellent entry level machine that punches above its price
The standard coil is perfectly adequate for your needs at the moment
Your main issue appears to be your reluctance to experiment and keep at it
So
In my opinion you should save the £100 or whatever it is to buy a new bigger coil and instead spend approx £5 and buy a hammered coin and some small Roman coins from the online auction site that we dont speak of on our forums
Then
Bury said coins in your Grandparents garden and spend an hour going over them with your machine, change the settings and see if it enhances or degrades the signals, practice with your pinpoint

That £5 and the hour you spend doing the above will open your mind and eyes to the potential of your Grandparents garden and your machine with the standard coil, and the hobby takes its hold over you and you will be with us for the rest of your life :D

I used a Nel Tornado coil on the ACE 250 and it will give more depth, but slightly not massively. Its main advantage is in the increased ground coverage.
A downside is that it is slightly heavier and although the extra weight is not an issue it does spoil the ballance of the machine. Even so I would still recommend the Nel Tornado for the ACE250

I agree with BA about digging the foil, for 2 reasons: Firstly, some "good" targets can sound like foil so you might be missing good things thinking they are foil, secondly by removing foil (and iron) it might reveal good deeper targets.

Making good finds depends on 2 things, firstly and IMHO most importantly LUCK, secondly good permissions (eg a small field that in medieval times was used as a market is likely to have more hammered coins than 100 acres on a barren mountain top.
So as BA said "it may be a fair few years before you find your first hammered coin, or even your first Roman coin" .... but it might be the next time you go detecting. You just never know.

That’s very true even though it hurts to say it. I really appreciate your help, I think I will buy some cheap coins to experiment with.
Maybe in the future I will get that lucky dig.

Thank you again,
Zach
