The canslaw is unavoidable to all really as it's within the range of desirable targets. If you don't dig those target numbers you will miss some good targets unfortunately.

If you are new to the machine I suggest you do as the manual says all metal 2 off from the top of sensitivity, you will dig rubbish but I'm afraid it's the only way to learn the different beeps

It's probably a good idea to dig everything to begin with, to see what you find compared to what the 250 display was telling you. You should begin to get an idea of what's almost certainly trash and what's worth digging. I've seen it suggested that you take out the first three notches to eliminate iron, foil and pull tabs, you'll still see them on the display but you won't get the low note sounds, it's the higher notes you're after. Bear in mind though that you could be missing good (ish) stuff by doing that. I've tried it and I switched back to all metal aftr a while, didn't want to risk missing anything. Also try knocking the sensitivity down a few notches. But basically experiment with it, dig yourself a test bed and bury assorted items in it, that'll give you a good feel for what the detector is telling you.
