Vallon PI Purchase

Post by Wigeon »

I am considering buying a Vallon PI for a specialised job on the fen edge.
I have carefully read all the excellent information on MDF, so pretty well informed regarding pros and cons of this machine.
There is a chap regularly selling them who seems to have several grades/prices according to condition etc.

Has anyone had experience of dealing with this person and if so what is your opinion please?

Cannot comment on that seller but the one i used was very good although i have just checked and he has no items for sale, still to be done is to get a section of plastic pipe to allow for the broken armrest to be repaired, stolen from the interweb so not my idea.
Your not looking for an aircraft by any chance?

If there is indeed a votive offering horizon, the artefacts are likely to be fairly deep under the peat, lying on the clay. As one moves away from the fen edge, the peat is mainly clear of iron so hopefully a PI machine will pick up any bronze objects.
Unless bone dry, the peat is fairly easy to dig, which will be just as well from what I can gather regarding these machines.
No doubt there will be a some very deep horseshoes that provoke a few expletives though. Good exercise if nothing else 8-|

Please remember digging deep down is against the code of conduct for metal detecting, especially on unploughed land.

I may sound like I’m being a goody two shoes but actually it really isn’t a good idea - it can get the hobby a lot of bad press too - so please think carefully about how deep you start digging ::g

Perhaps more 'School Marm' than 'Goody Two shoes' Cath, :(( however you make a fair point.

As an amateur archaeologist and historian, I am fully aware of this thank you. I would never dig into archaeology !!

This is farmland that has recently been very deeply ploughed to almost two feet and under-drained to a depth of four feet. Hence (probably) dragging up the middle bronze age palstave that I recovered last summer.

One Swallow doesn't make a summer would best describe the current situation perhaps?

We have recently discovered a nearby, previously unknown Mesolithic seasonal camp and field-walked it. The flints are currently with experts for evaluation and decision as whether to test-pit that site as a community archaeology project.

My objective is to establish whether or not we have a votive site. If so, the landowner and I will be delighted to call in the Cambridge unit to investigate. I need more than one palstave to attract their interest though.

The palstave is currently with our FLO for recording. Trained and experienced archaeologists, who happen to be good friends have already visited the site with me.

I trust this will reassure you and allay your concerns. :)
