Mills bomb mk1 base plug a minefield to date? ID’d VADIS maker 1942

Post by Lowland » Tue Nov 14, 2017 4:27 pm

Hi all
This surfaced in a grazing field very near to where all the blank rounds and mortar fins keep appearing.
The casings are usually dated 1943 if I remember correctly,

When I found it I thought to myself with all those markings on the bottom it should be easy to date....
Not so!
I can't even pin down a manufacturer.,,there's loads on the mills grenadecollectors website.
But I can't see this one
Plus it's double stamped and a bit faint.
Any help /opinions appreciated ,I would love to know more about the markings.
Cheers

Millsgrenades.co.uk, have similar bases with the SDR mark but can`t see the info.
Expect RRPG will be able to identify it for you.
Nice find ::g

💥ID!
The millsgrenade site is excellent.
Worth a squint for the list of companies that made them.
Interesting read

I Love finding these :)

You should also find the other bits to the Mills in that area, bits like this;

Excellent picture!
That’s a lot of bits flying about...
There was a couple of smallish chunks that looked like casting splatter ,if that makes sense(?)
That were found in the same neighbourhood.
Do you think they could be related to the grenade?
Thanks for putting the picture up

Post them for us to see. Unlikely to be from the mills bombs, might be natural or signs of smelting from earlier.
