Sand Scoop manufacture

As we are off to the Norfolk Beaches in April I thought a Sand Scoop would be beneficial but instead of buying one I thought it would be more fun to manufacture one from scratch.
I did not want to make it from Mild steel as clearly in salt water it would rust very quickly and Stainless steel is difficult to work with, so the preferred choice would be Aluminium (English spelling – it is NOT Aluminum!).
I bought a 250mm length of 150mm diameter 3mm thick tube section that would be the basis of the scoop, prior to any more work on it the weight was 1004 grams.
After cutting the angle for the scoop it now weighed 750 grams, after drilling 90 off 12mm holes and 90 off 6 mm holes it was down to 650 grams.
I then cut a circular base to fit inside the scoop and drilled 31 off 12mm holes and 12 off 6mm holes.
The shaft is 1000mm long and 3mm thick fitted with a black plastic bung to stop the water getting into it. A small length of 20mm square tube I had lying around was used for the brace.
All of this was accomplished with a hacksaw, files and drilled with a pillar drill
I took the parts to a local engineering factory this morning and it was all welded for me today,
All together the complete assembly weighs just 1300 grams.

Hello Runnerflash ::g Well a great deal of thought has gone into that project which has resulted in a very professional looking tool.::g When I decided to fit a long handle to my s/s scoop, I soon discovered I needed an additional hand-grip near the 'scoop' just to aid the lifting effort (I'm no spring chicken) to prevent the scoop from swinging upside-down under the weight and emptying the contents prematurely. :(

I love to see quality design and handiwork in DIY projects and your's has the look of a really well executed job ::g Regards ss47
