Nice find Nige, funnily enough I had something similar the other day, wasn't sure if it was a fossil or I remember somebody on here recently talking about banded flint ?

I will add a pic a bit later if you don't mind, its out in the van ? :D ::g ::g

im afraid I don't think it is a fossil - you do get flints with all sorts of "flaming" running through them... I don't know what causes it though I'm afraid...

Here it is mate, the lines are on two sides, really not sure what it is, just got soaked getting it though, it's like a monsoon out there.

It is possible, a few years back someone on a fossil forum found an amazing partial fish preserved in flint/chert.
Rolling about naked in mud will give the wrong impression.

seems to be isopod / trilobite type thing. i can see jointed legs
going to polish the face, should show better detail, may take a while on a bench grinder with buffer wheel

A fossil contained within flint is something I've never seen let alone come across, so well done on what has to be a very unusual if not scarce find ::g Regards ss47

Rather than a fossil I think yours is a skeleton encased in flint. Rather like the flys etc that were encased in Amber.
It’s a fantastic find. Great one for the collection ::g

Evening All,
Here is a bit of flint I found with a bit of "flaming" in it... It leaves a bit more to the imagination than ninja nige's one but you can see the very clean lines and defined area too which seem to be prevalent in these sort of rock anomalies... oh and a very nice and very smooth echinoid found this afternoon in Herts!
