ID Challenge No.16 (10-6 to13-6-19)

Post by thefiggis » Mon Jun 10, 2019 6:35 pm

What ho,

Had a bit of result with the "possibles" submitted to the FLO, with three items turning out to be good finds and this is one of them. In truth I strongly suspected what it was but the date attributed to it surprised me. Thought I'd offer it up here as a challenge wossname.

Any road up, it's copper alloy and was found in an area turfing out finds from all eras from BA onwards (yeah, like that helps, eh?)

Closes some time after the pubs close 5pm on Thu 13th June

I think this may have ended up in my scrap bin.
My absolute guess would be; part of a Celtic Iron Age La Tene type Brooch - but a fairly crude one?
no idea really, no change there then.. :)
XP Deus, 11" X35 coil, WS4 back-phones, remote and an empty bank balance. XP MI 6 pin pointer. Garrett Ace 250 wireless MPow set up.
They told me I’d never be any good at poetry, because I’m dyslexic, but so far I’ve made 3 jugs and a vase.

I am split between a Bronze Age chisel and a Roman stylus. Without holding it I would probably go for the stylus simply because the stem is quite fine, the chisels tend to be a bit chunkier.

First impression is that it resembles part of a cutlery fork, but no doubt isn't.

Quite a broad range of ideas on this one and it's scarcely surprising as it could comfortably fit into a number of camps. It also goes to show how that images, while a help, are no substitution for holding the item in your hand to get a proper feel of it. Strangely, one of the closest to the FLO's id was Blackadder43. That is to say that wax is involved in both :))

Any road up, I believed it to be the spatulate end of a Roman stylus and was pleasantly surprised when the FLO identified it as a stylus fragment right enough, but an early medieval one, dating 700-900. While this particular find is yet to be entered onto the PAS database, there's a close match on it here.

That's what the FLO thinks, but of course these items can be open to interpretation and if you still think differently then by all means say so ::g

Huge thanks as ever to all who had a bash ::g
