Partefact Challenge No.1

Post by thefiggis » Sat Dec 01, 2018 3:58 pm

Partefacts - we all find them. Sometimes identification is easy, other times not so and a decent find can be consigned to the scrap bucket simply because we have no idea what it is.

If we can be more aware of the small details of certain objects then we'll be better equipped to make an accurate ID when we find part of one, so to this end we thought we'd try something a little different.

Below are the front and side images of part of an object. Have a look and see if you think you know what it is. Having made your mind up, you can then click on the "spoilers" which will reveal the item in full.

Like the ID Challenge, it will be an occasional series and here's the first one, just to get the idea. It's just a bit of fun, no trick questions and the thread will be left open for comment, so
if you want to have a go without knowing what others might think then don't scroll down beyond the first post.

Hope it proves to be of use. The real test will come on things you've narrowed down to maybe a couple of possibilities, you're undecided and there's that infernal "spoiler" button saying, "Press me - you know you want to."

I would say either a Bronze age, Le tene, or Roman brooch partifact, but I am using a few years judgement to guess the dimensions, which I may be way off on .. My backstop would be a recent pot leg. So hopefully all bases are covered.

I looked and looked and couldn’t work it out. W3nt and made a drink, came back and looked again. Got it ! And I didn’t use the spoiler till I reckognised it.
All I’ll say is ‘catchplate’ leave the rest so’s not to spoil it. :D
Great idea. Not only for ID of our own finds but all those pics that keep popping up with no size comparison and a bit fuzzy round the edges ::g

Is your 1000th post. Congrats! ::g

The experience you describe is exactly what we were hoping for, LB. Thanks, and don't worry about the catchplate comment - there's a warning not to scroll down beyond the OP for those who want to have a go.
