It's in the post, Fred. Another Nox 800 so you can use both arms, seeing as your finds rate has been so low with only the one ;)

Farthing, Halfpenny or Penny?

All were mentioned in this challenge ...

I still don't know if I got a correct ID - Surely someone [The Boss [who is the boss]? will give a definitive This that or the other ... :-SS

As we've mentioned, this is a genuinely inidentified item. We put it up on a closed thread, ideas are submitted, the thread is reopened, the answers discussed and a concensus arrived at.

No bosses involved! (Well, apart from Her Ladyship who's demanding (yet) another gin ;;z )

Roughly speaking, the halfpennies and farthings were about as thin as the full pennies. So to make them weigh one half and one quarter that of a penny, they had to make them smaller in diameter. Halfpennies are about 70% the diameter, Farthings are half the diameter. So this 11mm coin is clearly in farthing territory.
And it looks amateurish simply because it's difficult to get the same precision engraving on such small dies. I suspect the poster who suggested it's a forgery was thinking it looks poor quality, so may be a counterfeit, or an Esterling.

Many hammerds have a very similar design but size is the key to the denomination. I guess that as it is clearly an Irish coin many just guessed at it being Dublin mint rather than actually figuring the Waterford mint legend - probably thrown by the V?

Email or PM?

Have a look in your User Control Panel/Board Preferences/Edit Notifications Settings and see if email notifications is checked. If it is, you can uncheck it.

Ok, if nobody's bookmarked the topic (you can do this by selecting from the topic tools spanner thingy next to "Post reply") and haven't changed their notifications settings then it looks like we've got a little gremlin in the works.

Sorry about that. I'll lock this off for a bit to save you any more unwanted emails and look into it.

Thanks for pointing it out ::g

So, from the general concensus bearing in mind the coin's size (11mm), it would appear to be an Edward I Irish farthing from the Waterford mint (CIVITAS VATERFOR).

Many thanks to all who had a bash ::g
