I purchased the nox 800 as the safari proved to be too heavy for me over a long dig.

The nox is so light in comparison and a lot more adjustable. I started to use it 'out of the box' and as I got more used to it I started to do some adjustments to the settings. For me that was a big mistake as up till then I had not fully understood the ground balance setting so was leaving it on zero. I probably adjusted too many settings together as well so it never seemed to be right.

Anyway, I figured out why I was getting the ground balance wrong so the other day I went out, noise cancelled & ground balanced then set off on field 1 with only recovery & iron balance lowered.

What a difference, it was like a new machine. Despite the scrappy ground it was quiet and none of the falsing I had been experiencing. The land I can currently search on my permissions isn't very productive so I'm looking forward to getting on the cleaner and more productive fields once the crops have been cut. I even managed to detect on sensitivity of 24 where as previously I was having to reduce it to 19 or 18.

On my land I've found an Iron Bias of 3 and a Recovery Speed of 3 or 4 seems ideal now that I'm setting the Ground Balance correctly. I've also found that the ID numbers are more consistent since I stopped mucking about and started understanding what I'm doing and why I'm doing it.

There's a learning curve you have to climb and that takes longer than a couple of days out. I can't wait to get out on a field that known to be productive to practice what I've learned the last few day and with a bit of luck I get a bit higher up the learning curve than I've been stuck at for a few weeks.

Thanks folks. It should be with me tomorrow and I can't wait to try it out. I doubt it'll be tomorrow, even though it's my day off, as I have to take the pup to the vets for surgery and collect her in the afternoon.

Some of the settings may seem a bit daunting for a while, so maybe I'll just hold off with the tweaks until I have a better understanding of the new machine.

I'm keen to get back on the field where I found my first ever Hammered coin!

Can I just say thanks again to you all for sharing your thoughts and advice. What a great forum this is.

Don't be afraid to adjust the Iron Bias and Reactivity. They can always be set back if you are worried, but you will get more from the machine doing so. The default programs use odd settings for these two.

Good luck and have fun

::g

(Iron Bias=2 and Reactivity=4 for starters ;) )

PS. It was a member on here who's advice helped me to figure out where I was going wrong with the ground balance.

Sorry Fred. I had forgotten who had given the advice. I had followed the book but for some reason could get it to work and couldn't understand why not.

Very interesting to read all your posts here. As the owner of a Garrett 400i whilst I am getting on with it I do feel that I am missing out on a lot of finds that you Equinox 800 owners are having.

I recently was working an area of flat field and only turned up silver foil, bits of insulated wire and other rubbish and moved on but found that coins, rings and other good finds were made by owners of the 800 on exactly the same area I had been searching...................so........your comments and others on this forum have helped me make the decision to go and buy one.

So thank you all for your input and I look forward to joining you all. ::g

my first thoughts are that you and the other searchers did NOT cover precisely the same area of ground. There's absolutely nothing wrong with your choice of machine as other users will testify.
The old adage remains true - you have to pass the search-coil over it to find it ::g Regards ss47 ::g

It's true but it also helps if the detector goes bleep as it passes over the target! :D

That is also very true Fred, (that is unless you're searching without audio) 8-| when reliance on a meter indication will be required :D

Wet grass shouldn't be a problem at all. If it's higher try reducing the sensitivity to about 21. If you can't sort it out yourself pm me and we'll try and work out what's happening. ::g
