Upgrading Cscope CS3MXi - which coil would suit me best?

Post by Cat »

Hi guys,

I am planning to buy additional coil for my CS3MXi.

Cscope has two of them - 8 x 11" 2D and 11 x 14" 2D. First one is quite affordable - 75£ plus postage and the other one is 200£ plus postage, quite pricey but if it's worth it I'm happy to pay.

What would you suggest? I couldn't find any thread with comparison of those two coils.

Thanks.

When I had the CS6mxi I also used the big coil. I liked this coil but it's a bit heavy and will give an unbalance to your detector. Maybee possible to try first?

Thanks for answer.

Have you noticed any difference with that bigger coil? Does it perform better than standard one?

Compared to the 8x11" , yes you will gain some more depth (I gues +/- 2" average) . But the coil is very heavy and after a few hours of hunting your arm will be a bit longer ;) .
I don't know the difference compared to the polo search head (maybee email to C.scope, I know they are very willing to advice you)

Upgrading to the 2D coil will give you slightly more depth and you get the advantadge of how a 2D head works over the concentric.

Personally i would go for the smaller of the 2D coils on the 3MX due to the weight of the larger coil and the control box being mounted on top of the stem. If you want to use the larger coil i would get the stem kit which is an upgrade for the original 6mx so you can mount the control box under the arm cups to counter balance the weight of the large coil. The only disadvantages of going down this route are you controls will be upside down and the possibility of having trouble using the machines pin-point function.

Hope this helps
Andy

Hi Cat

I have the settup described by andy fragle, on a 6mx thoyugh, not a 3.
The 8X11 2d coil and the control box mounted under the arm cup.
This is a great setup (look at me previous poosts for finds).
Easy to use for upo to 3 or 4 hours, longer than that for a full day UI use a harness.
I dont use the pinpoint function anymore, dont miss it, I think I do dig bigger holes but use a pinpointer to locate the target in the clod or hole and a digging knife in the main hole.
This works well for me.

My DB has the same setup but with the 13 inch coil. In our tests he does get a bit more depth on largish hammereds etc of 1 to 2 inches. On the really small stuff depth is about the same. For me it is not worth the extra weight and 200 quid for the bigger coil. We find about the same amount of stuff (I think I cover more ground). Ocassionaly on hard worked ground and pasture with everything really deep he pulls a bit more, but on cultivated about the same finds rate.

Some folks use the control box belt mounted but I havent really tried this.

I really rate the elliptical 11 inch coil, a fast recovery on 18KHZ. the c scopes are uinder-rated machines I think.
