How do you keep your find

Post by oliver »

I was just wondering how people keep there finds as i have just been in my finds room a spare bedroom and i took a pic of these finds that have been sat on a tea tray for a while.I do keep most of my coins in a cabinet that i made. But i have boxes of finds that i have found over the years that do not see the light of day.How does this compare i sure my wife will dump most of it one day as she calls it junk (:|

Yes it can begin to be a problem after a few years as the stuff mount up i have given some finds to museums over the years and to private collectors gave most of my flint finds away to a local chap who was a member of my local archaeology society i belong to.

Keep the best - such as they are! - in a couple of display cases. The rest in a case I got from Liddls with about 5 trays with different size spaces, or in coin cases. I also document & cross ref all the finds I keep with PAS records, UKDFD prints etc so my long suffering descendants will know what's what. I live in hope that someone, somewhere, someday will be interested!!

If you have a better look you will see that it is a replica stater as is the silver coin next to it. (:|

How much would a stater be worth ? Couldn't you get a valuation and pay the farmer half the value , I know I wouldn't want to part with something that special

The landowner wanted to keep the coin so he paid me half had me over a barrel but it turned out very well as the site has turned up some nice finds over the years and he introduced me to a few neighboring farmers. ::g

i suppose i'm lucky in that respect, the other half is nuttier than i am when it comes to detecting, i am more interested in the technology and tinkering, she actually detects more than i do.
but its all good.

I split my finds into three categories. Best and most valued finds in one Tupperware tub. Another one with nice interesting finds and another larger one with less interesting finds like repeats of items I already have and unidentified objects.

I haven't told the enemy yet but we have just had our spare bedroom redecorated and we are planning to turn it into an upstairs lounge room, I plan to turn it into a lounge room / finds room with a couple of small tasteful display cases and some wall mounted frames ::g

Hope I can gradual sneak it in without her putting a stop to it ;)
