Any ideas what this Lidar pic could be? (extra pic added 1/12/2019)

Post by The Bassman » Thu Nov 28, 2019 9:35 am

Old and modern maps show nothing in this area. Aerial photos show nothing, however LIDAR shows this in a field.

it is in an area of quite concentrated Roman occupation, with villas and temples nearby. this pic is quite enlarged to try to show features. The item is approximately 50 meters wide by 100 meters long.

Although it looks like I may be getting permission here, it is sadly, quite a way out of my area.

Any thoughts welcome.

Thanks

Ok, maybe this will give a better idea of the site "in situ" so to speak.

Do you have any history of the site especially as to how the rectangle fits in with the raised areas near it? :;@

Assuming that it's not the farmers dope patch :D it might be a test area for new seeds or a crop treatment or similar.

I know farmers who grows odd patches of sunflower seeds or sweetcorn for wildlife feeding or game cover but these are usually along the edges of the field. ::g

This field is regularly ploughed, left this year for grazing, Farmer has no idea what it could be. It is not visible on ground or from aerial photos, and has never shown on any maps.

It is obviously man made, raised area is natural, nearby depressions are old chalk workings.

Looks like a cover crop , inbetween two woods. The birds roost in the woods and go to the cover crop to feed. On shoot days they are flushed out by beaters and get slotted as they fly back to the woods.

I'm more interested by the oblique linear on the lower part of the field, this could be an old fence line or perhaps an old field boundary.
God gives all men all earth to love, but since man’s heart is small,
Ordains for each one spot shall prove beloved over all.
Each to his choice, and I rejoice, the lot has fallen to me
In a fair ground—in a fair ground—Yea, Sussex by the sea!

If you find out the LIDAR resolution you might get an idea of the depth/height?

Why not look on a satellite image and see what’s there? That should sort out the question I suggest ::g

There is absolutely nothing visible on the ground, nothing showing using google earth or other aerial sources.

I have been researching this as I have been off work following major surgery and will be going for further op on Tuesday, therefor unable to detect on site

The only thing confusing with the game cover idea, is where would the shooters stand? Given the the birds would fly to the left and to the right... there isnt a flight path long enough to allow the birds to gain sufficient height to make themselves a safe and decent target.

The guns would line out along either of the tree lines, beaters would converge from behind first with flag men either side across the field. There is plenty of distance for them to get some height , there is about 250 /300 yards to the tree line. Pheasants launch at about 40 degrees.
Any beaters that get shot are simply buried in the field. ::g

Contact the nearest university with an archeology department and ask them.

As others have said, try and detect the area and see what comes up. A ton shot gun pellets would add weight to shoot cover theory (although i am somewhat sceptical about that explanation).

Very well thought through if you dont mind me saying.. but wouldnt all the pheasants fall into the woods? The picker-uppers would think it a blast ::g ::g ::g =D>

Most of the birds drop about half way across, any that go over are retrieved by dogs.
Mainly it's an excuse for rich persons to dress up in Edwardian clothes, get drunk and spend lots of money. Some shoots charge £20 a bird.. Beaters get £15 a day and lots of verbal abuse. :))
