Old survey notations

Post by LloydF »

Does anyone happen to know what the non-capitalised "e" denotes on an old survey map? I can find most other notations but nothing about a "small e"

Thanks in advance

Doesn't that just mean enclosure?

No idea, its a new field for me to have a go at on Wednesday, the Farmer just said it has a really old building in it, no signs of an enclosure anywhere but it could well be!

Thanks!

Send a photo to the Ordnance survey and they will reply to you. If possible mention the date of the map.

The small "e" doesn't appear to be in the map legend of the time (or any others). x;

Could possibly be an Estate building, ie labourers cottage or farm workers house. I saw a similar thing on an Irish web page where the main house was given an 'a' and the workers cottages b, c,d etc., just another angle to consider I guess. But good luck with Ordnance Survey I'll be looking for the update. :)
