Best way of cleaning this denarius?

Post by potter01 »

Hi all,

Found this yesterday and now thinking of cleaning it as it’s abit crusty. As every coin is different I thought I best ask as I’ve never done it before. Any help appreciated

A toothpick might get the crud off or, if you're after a quicker result, a zap or two of electrolysis will sort it.
Essential equipment:
Some sort of electrical gubbins(I'm told it's a Deus). In various colours
Jenkins
Gin.

Spit and foil is like putting slimline tonic into gin - disgusting and totally unnecessary =)) Water and foill does exactly the same thing and raises fewer eyebrows.

It might work, but that looks like more industrial methods might be in order. It depends how you want the coin to look. Maybe try foil to start with then work up.

I agree with sweepstick - it's great as it is. I would be inclined to leave it alone as quite often a zealously cleaned Roman loses clarity.
