Gold Ring

Post by Stillburning »

A few weeks ago I went down to Devon and had a great day out with my friend Mark, it was his first day out with the Nox 800.

I couldn't join him this Saturday due to the ban on unnecessary travelling, but got a text from him (first 2 photos) at lunchtime as he had found a gold ring ::g ::g

From the photos that came off the field I thought the writing looked like a posy ring, his wife thinks it might say "love the giver".

Mark has sent me a couple more photos this evening but we are not sure now if it is gold and if he needs to report it to the FLO?

It looks as if it is either gold or silver gilt. The FLO should be able to confirm it - eventually. ::g

Thanks Fred ::g

Do you think it is a posy ring and old enough to qualify as treasure? (assuming its precious metal)

I can't actually see for sure if the script looks old enough but the wording does sound archaic. Possibly not treasure but best to make certain. ::g

Posy ring .. fine cursive text c.1700 .. or I want my money back!
Brilliant find.
edit .. looks like there is a makers mark which would put it 1700+ Plus a few years
Imagine there is no heaven, only sky above us.

I think that the photos haven't done it any favours. It should be possible to get ones showing the natural colour as well as sharp ones showing the makers mark and the inscription. Definitely hopeful anyway. ::g

I would guess that this will need to be declared but will probably be returned if it can't be pinned it down to the qualifying date for treasure. The exception might be if the makers mark is already associated with other items which have been firmly dated. ::g

It looks as though some copper alloy material is peeping out in places. Hope it is gold and a posy ring though. Still a nice find. ::g
