Hot silver.

Post by Easylife » Tue May 21, 2019 10:45 pm

I was about to switch off the Nox after a not very eventful short session when it pinged at 24 on the last target. I thought hmmm could be silver, and sure enough it was. A worn gothic florin came up looking very pale indeed. Later when placed between foil to clean it up, it got so hot that I had to put it down, in fact it completely destroyed the foil which I have not known to happen before. It's strange how the Nox seems to find silver virtually every session, though was very last minute this time, but always welcome. :D

I agree they are a very attractively designed coin. When you place it's current counter part
(a 10 pence piece) alongside it, they have nothing in common at all.....but then, I'm just an old nostalgic.

At the risk of digressing 8-| in the 1950's, my dad was a bus conductor who with experience, was able to identify the coins tendered for a ticket without always looking at them.
He told me it was a useful ability for avoiding the need to make-up foreign coin deficiencies when 'cashing-up! He was given an 1849 Gothic florin which he identified as such, decided to accept it and gave it to me, which I still have ::g Regards ss47
A disservice is no service at all.

Nice one SS, I have only ever found one other, an 1879 in very good condition but today's one though worn still brought a smile and was instantly recognised, but I agree that they are a special looking coin. It was by a footpath in an area with lots of foil so just gets the occasional wander over from time to time. ::g

I have had a few of them over the years and they are lovely. I also found a small hoard of forged ones in the Thames. :D

The burning up of the foil sometimes happens during the cleaning of silver but I have no idea why.

I just assumed that it was something to do with the initial whitish appearance which may have added something chemically? x;

It may just be that it was actually quite clean chemically so it reacted very quickly. ::g
