Unusual bag seal -cross and pellet design

Post by Lowland » Tue May 21, 2019 12:34 pm

Morning-thought this was Worth a look.
An ordinary enough looking bag seal ,but with the remains of a cross and pellet design.
The visible half of the design has a black material on the surface-
something applied at the time of manufacture or what?
There are traces of the black stuff on other parts too.
I can find a few cross and pellet bag seals on bag seals.org
All different to this one.

It struck me as quite unusual Fred,
I have maybe three other same sized ones with no discernible detail
Whatever the black is it looks like it’s saved the design,
The ghost outline of the of the circle/design is definitely there-just!
Has to be quite an early item-perhaps 1600s
Will need to try and read up on them I think.

Ohhhh that looks like a ‘pick the encrustations off slowly’ job when the young whipper snappers are in bed. I bet there’s loads of detail underneath there ::g

:)) by the time the last ones off,the first ones back up :))
I think the details the other way round and it’s like the last surviving bit,
Rather than under the surface-I hope I’m wrong!
I’m away for another look :D

Whilst I'm sure it's not the answer, I had an old wooden 'draughts' set where the pieces had identical markings.

Please don't, at least not until you are sure exactly what it is. If it turns out to be a Saxon weight with metal inserted or something important you could ruin it! :D
