My heart skipped a beat

Post by shaggybfc » Tue May 14, 2019 2:07 pm

Hi all,
on a pasture permission yesterday that has lots of promise with local history from Celtic, Roman through to modern day. For me, the land hasn't given up anything older than Edward I pennies. I'd been in the field for about an hour and had recovered a George II half penny grot, a 1936 shilling and far too much lead and aluminium. I got a signal that returned approx 60 - 62 (Deus), a bit sketchy, but consistent from all angles, so it had to come up. I flicked over the sod, and there at the bottom of the hole was something gold coloured, round and had a head on it..... It had to be a coin! a lovely gold Roman coin.... my heart stopped and then raced away.... I was 2 seconds away from doing the Michael Jackson Thriller dance... but it wasn't to last. It turned out to be a livery button,,, big sigh.
Still, I do like a good button and I think I can say this is a fine example and will sit nicely alongside my other buttoms.

An interesting button button with Indo-Asian connections I think. I thought at first it might be an anti-slavery related item from the image.

Also the motto has links to the De Crespigny family, but doesn't look likely.

Thanks Alan. There are a few families that have used similar heads on buttons. All slightly different - bell in ear, bow in hair etc. Also the motto seems to have been used by several families. I've looked to see if any had connections to north Gloucestershire, but no obvious links. I really like these livery buttons, they have great personal history.
I'm waiting for DiOz, he seems to be the wizz on these topics. ::g

We’ve all done that - seen that hint of gold and had a heart skipping thrill of thinking we’d struck gold X( . But that’s a lovely button anyway :D
