First gold ring!!! Plus 3 silver coins.

Post by Mancave-man »

Had 4 and a half hours on a new permission today, mainly stubble but manageable and found three silver coins. First one is a Queen Victoria shilling dated 1896 and is very nice. The second is a Q. Victoria silver threepence dated 1881 and currently lost under the sofa! Also very nice. The third one is a very worm hammered coin that has probably been made into a love token. I have no idea when it's from but it has a dotted line on one side so some clever person may be able to give it a rough ID.
Moved to another field after lunch and found a small thin and bent gold ring which is a first for me.
Looks to have the letters W E followed by a lion then an anchor then a gothic "P" and possibly two other indistinguishable letters. If anyone could give me a year from that scant info I would be very grateful.
Also found the usual rubbish. Large horse shoes etc and a finds bag full of lead! Lord it was heavy!!

Anyway, good luck and happy hunting to all,

Regards,

M-m

Nice. I'm still in search of my first gold. And I've only ever had 1 bit of silver in the shape of a hammered fragment. Well done

The pic isn't very good but here goes! Wondered if it might be 1838 - 1839? :-/

That looks more like a silver hallmark than a gold one, there is no purity mark so maybe plated? x;
I'm thinking William Ehrhardt, 2 May 1890 - Jul 1890. ::g

Gothic ‘P’ Probably 1838 and the Anchor is Birmingham. But, as usual, I stand to be corrected. Can’t make out the makers initials, sorry.
Lovely find, well done ::g

Did you base that on the colour? It would be useful to see what's after the "p". x; :D ::g

Have had another look in the daylight and there doesn't appear to be anything after the letter "P" only the letters W E before the lion symbol. Hope that helps.

Regards to all,

Between the late 1700s and 1844, they had the lion passant on 18ct and 22ct gold as well as silver.The 18ct had a crown mark the 22ct didn't. It looks like gold and its bent without breaking suggesting its quite malleable, i will be surprised if it isn't but couldn't be 100% sure without getting it tested.
It might be worth m-cave getting it restored and tested at the same time at a jewellers.
