Seal or button? Thimble age SOLVED Royal Arms service button

Post by Rucky75 » Mon Feb 12, 2018 8:55 pm

Hi had the seal or button or something for a while and wondered if you guys could help me identify it , looks like it has a lion on both sides, the design on it almost looks what would be on a half Anna coin, not in the best condition so apologies. Also wondered if the thimble could be aged, modern or old?. Both items found on the coastline on grazed field. 6- 7cm deep with garrett Ace 200 i, stock coil. Any ideas would be great. Thankyou.

Oh! I found something very similar to the bottom photo's, quite thin, different design yet had a small hole in the middle.

Hi Dom, yeah it's a strange little thing, as you say it's thin, I could probably hammer out the creases to be honest. My symbol almost looks like what would be on a 3 lion EIC half Anna coin.

Looks like a two piece general service button with not much left. Most likely from one of the wars

Unfortunately the thimble is machine made. So doubt it has any great age.

Hmm... my one and indeed this one has designs that look very little to do with military designs and looks stamped rather than molded.

Thanks Koala, Yes thought the thimble could be modern, but my first thimble find so was very happy to dig it up.

Definitely button related.

Thanks Koala, you guys are absolute stars on here, I've been magnifying that item for a couple of weeks now, I'm a newbie to metal detecting and had nearly given up on identifying this so thankyou.

Modern is relative.

Still probably lost by someone working in the fields 100 years ago. Could be a good omen. I have alway found something nice in the same area as a thimbles

Your not wrong Koala a few weeks before I found the thimble I found a Sebastopol clasp from a Crimean war medal 1855 very near to wear I dug the thimble, beautiful find it was. I'm still searching for the rest of the medal mind. Ha ha
