First find

Post by satelite2017 » Fri Jan 12, 2018 9:14 pm

Thought I'd have a practice with the detector before I go to my permission and look an idiot who doesn't know what there doing. So went to the wife's horse field and what do know....Found a tiny coin. Diameter is about 15mm. Markings look similar to Spanish 16th century but would welcome your experience.

It's a Charles I coin. A pic of the obverse would help but, @ 15mm it's probably a halfgroat.

Thanks for that, I was a million miles away lol. Didn't take a pic of back a build up of corrosion has covered all markings

The first target I got I dug a plug the size of the coil, checked the plug, no signal. Checked the hole, nice tone...dug some more out, checked that, signal still in hold. Kept doing this until I was two foot deep. Signal was smack center of the hole, how come? Surly target couldn't be that deep and be detected??????. So wasn't a great start. started to presume I was doing something wrong or I'd bought a duff detector. Does it matter if the coil touches the ground when sweeping or using the pinpoint mode ?.

It sounds like either the target was in the side of the hole (most likely) or deep iron. A hand held pinpointer is very useful in that situation.

It should be okay as long as you are not hitting anything solid which would cause false signals.
What a great start for you. ::g

Pinpointer.... Yep definitely on the shopping list, nearly got one same time as the detector but thought I'd just make sure I like/get on with the hobby. Most definitely hooked now lol

I did say about the huge hole I dug. I did find a golf ball size blob of rust, a triangular rusty plate and a 4" square piece of ally sheet on the same session. I suppose "first find" is a bit misleading I mean First find worth noting lol

Went to the horse field again today and started in the same area but went north/south instead of east/west. Today was much better than yesterdays one find. Today I got a 3" screw, a small piece of bent new metal, a press stud, but best of all a pencil sharpener. Not just any old sharpener but a metal DOUBLE pencil sharpener. Can't wait for next session.

I,ve left them at the field, but before you think of popping down and nicking them, there locked up in the tack room. I,ll retrieve them tomorrow and put them in my display along side the coin and take a photo

Finally got time to go and get my hoard from my second outing. Placed them next to coin

Image

So I cleaned up the largest object hoping it was from the bronze age or iron age, but obviously its from the aluminium age

Image

To make matters worse it doesn't sharpen pencils any more
