Incredible spindle whorl

Post by Ctxjimmy »

hi,
Found this today and I have never found or seen one like it. It would be great if someone could read the inscription.
Found using ctx at about 12 inches on pasture.
Thanks

Definitely one for the FLO, a significant find.
God gives all men all earth to love, but since man’s heart is small,
Ordains for each one spot shall prove beloved over all.
Each to his choice, and I rejoice, the lot has fallen to me
In a fair ground—in a fair ground—Yea, Sussex by the sea!

Just commented on this exceptional find on another site.

They have a very similiar example pictured from the PAS file showing one, but yours is even in better condition than their example.

Well saved. ::g

That IS different , with it being cast, it would suggest mass-production, and there would be others similar. But I don't recall seeing one like it, though there are some with blundered nonsense inscriptions.
My best attempt at the inscription is:
:: RYCh . I . AD . DAW . BE
...which doesn't make much sense, 'rych' is going to be 'rich' ( it's quite common in Medieval text to use Y instead of I ); ... perhaps it's humour, as its owner would likely be poor. For example it's interpreted as " Rich I will always be"

Edit: a quick browse on PAS database, and I've found a match, though the inscription is still not readable:
https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts ... /id/535087

They have my D as a G, which is quite possible.

... and another one, with a much better inscription, they interpret the D as a D, and offer a possible meaning:
https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts ... /id/510347

Interesting, only found one on UKDFD with the possibility of pseudo-letters, ie not a proper word, though unsure in this case, be very interesting to see the outcome of this

Wow great find!

I remember seeing one like this on TV a few years back, IIRC the symbols and wording where spells which the owner would spin into the wool to protect themselves.

Is it definitely a Whorl?
It doesn't seem to show any signs of wear, as they normally do.
Whatever it is, it's unusual.

That is a truly lovely offer but I value stuff I’ve found. They don’t mean as much if I haven't worked for it. Weird I know but it's how I am x;
