Awful, clipped, now broken hammy

Post by Oxgirl36 » Tue Oct 08, 2019 8:19 pm

Last hole of the day and deep. It’s clipped, it’s worn, it was cruddy. After cleaning it in the field (why did I do that :( ) it is now broken. A zap of electricity and it was cleaned beautifully.

Hot on 26khz with X35 coil on pasture. Came in at 79 with an unmistakable hammy whisper :D

Cath,

Such a shame about the break......

Can you give a few details of how you zapped it, what with and how long you cooked it for?

It's a Durham penny. If I was forced to bet, I'd go with Edward IV. ::g

Used a modified phone charger. Warm water, glass container, good teaspoon of salt flakes (doesn’t matter what type but I thought I’d be posh =)) ) but I just throw a load in now. How long? Gawd no idea. I put it in, take it out, check it, put it back in. Rotate it a bit and repeat. Decide by eye when it’s had enough. Gentle finger wipe and rinse. Probably takes 5 minutes but that’s with me messing.

If you look in the 9-12 o'clock quarter on the reverse you can just make out TAS, which means that what follows must be the mint. It starts with DV = DVNELM (Durham).

Yup one clip on the host item (small stainless spoon is my preferred one) and one for the coin.

A hammy is a Hammy though, well found
Does it now count as 2 hammys though?

Or 2 cut halves?

Anyway...a hammy is a hammy (or two) and 20th of the year with almost a quarter of it still left. So on track for 26 or 7 then! ::g ::g

A similar set up to mine except I use a large tub with a fair dose of washing soda. Depending upon the item to be zapped I either use a phone charger or a car battery charger (for horseshoes and suchlike). I've never had the need to zap a hammy as spit & foil have always been sufficient and brought out the highlights, and I'd still do it with that one to improve it.
Assuming Cath that your clips are connected to the correct wires, your's are connected the wrong way round! x; If you were using a copper spoon you would likely give that hammy an electroplating with copper. ""%*

The correct way.
Electrolysis.jpg
Using a stainless steel spoon as an anode works fine but is not ideal as the chromium can leech out of it (turning the solution yellow as yours has) which is not very user friendly at all in the long run. x;

Really not having a go at all but just think that new zappers should be aware of the correct process and possible risks. ::g

Actually it's the right way round for this set - the guy I bought this set from put the clips on the wrong wires. First time I used it I thought it was faulty =)).
