Matrix seal + probably a horse harness decoration

Post by Giz »

Spent an enjoyable afternoon detecting on the potato field that has yielded some nice finds recently. No coins today. However a matrix seal made a welcome appearance, unfortunately the detail is not good, also what probably is a horse harness decoration. Your thoughts are welcome. ::g

Shame about the bad corrosion of the seal, it's otherwise intact.
It's a tough ID, but the central image made me think it was the 'Lamb of God' - the wooly sheep with the stylised flag above it.
Similar to these examples:

If this is the case, your inscription is quite likely to be the same ECCE AGNVS DEI.

By the mounting points I'd say that it's a harness mount, though I'm not familiar with that design. ::g

Having the seal in front of me and not like yourself only armed with the photo, I can see from the links your theory is absolutely spot on. Well done! Probably like yourself I dislike having a "piece" of local history in front of me and not knowing the finer detail. ::g
