Silverplate/Silver Thimble Partifact - Struggling with Hallmarks

Post by TheAndyA »

I'm having a hard time trying to make out the Hallmarks on this broken Thimble, it may be Silverplated?

I dug it up this evening and although it's in a poor state, I'd like to get some idea of age. x;

Are there any miracle workers that are up for a challenge?

Maybe the first one is the Brittania mark, making it purer than sterling silver
Next mark is possibly a wheatsheaf making it "chester"
The last one looks like a little "o" in the specific shaped box with a point at the bottom which makes it around the 1800's ish

Thats my guess
:D

Meh, the Chester mark is usually 3 wheatsheaves, not 1 as yours looks like
Back to the drawing board lol

Double edit
Maybe it isnt a hallmark and maybe it is the makers mark??

Triple edit
I am sticking with the chester mark for the second one
Due to the britannia mark being crude i am going to assume the chester wheatsheaf is also crude
Maybe its not fully silver and some rogue maker was trying to get more money for his wares
Maybe its a forgery or a cheap £1 shop copy from back in the day?

Its late, i need my bed i think
Nite all

By the style of the thimble and the hallmark I would say 1897. ::g

The letter O is always a difficult one to differentiate but you might be able to clean it up a little more to be certain. Cleaning should also clear up the shape of the cartouch that the date letter is in, it should be a box with the corners cut off for all Chester dates. I don't think that your going to affect it's value by cleaning it! :D

Believe it or not, this was after some cleaning. I won't spend too much time on this one. :D
