Charles I Penny

Post by krip2454 » Tue Aug 13, 2019 11:44 am

Out yesterday with my local club somewhere in Kent on some arable land where if you hadn't had your three Weetabix, you would have struggled to get a spade in. There were some softer spots if you searched long enough.
A varied collection of buttons, lead lumps and other such junk was the usual days collection except this little beauty.
My first Charles I hammered. Well chuffed. I have been trying some amateur (very) research and I do believe the mint mark is a crown which would possibly put it from the Aberyswyth mint as a Provincial or Civil War mint. I am sure I will be corrected if I am wrong.
There are conflicting theories as to why it was pierced. Could it have been used as a pendant? Was it a Cromwellian supporter who defaced the Kings head, or was it vandalised after the King was executed?

Used my trusty XP Deus with the 9" coil on 'Ultimate' program. The weather was pretty good. None of the well needed wet stuff came down, but that wind was pretty strong.
