Seal Matrix Photos of Seal added

Post by arfur_sleep » Tue Jun 11, 2019 11:37 am

A friend of mine found this seal matrix on a club dig and wonders if anyone can assist in identifying the seal and what the wording reads. I know he was using the XP Deus V4 with 11 inch coil and GM setting and was found about 4 inches down. I am sorry there is no scale with these photo's but hope someone can assist.

Thanks for looking ::g

The impression is clean, the seal must be in good shape. Silver? Shame we don't get to see it.
And a better ID may be possible, too.

It reads:
+ S' hENRICI D WEDR B '
or .....WED' RB'

Can you post up the findspot roughly ? It could help with the ID.

Thanks for the replies and help with the lettering on this seal. I am trying to obtain photo's of the seal from the finder and will post them as soon as I receive them. The Seal is with the FLO at the moment but the finder thinks he took photo's before handing it in. ::g

interesting seal..i could be totally wrong but Henrici d wed..im assuming it translates as " henry did wed" if its an E not a B here is food for thought.. Eleanor of Aquitaine who was married to Henry 2nd seal seems of period and a flower is one of her symbols along with a hawk as on her seal...flower for her virtue I believe .the only wedding I can think that would be announced in this manner would be that of the king

also I did find this you will see its of their period and flower and seal design is almost identical .the writing differs https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts ... /id/109554

if it does relate to henry 2nd and his wedding..it could well be quite an important find'

if not relating to them it seems of their period at least being one similar to one in link they was king and queen after they wed on 18 May 1152 until 6 July 1189, when Henry died and her son Richard the Lionheart ascended the throne.... the flower could be a Rose. if so one I doubt it being is pink and white-splashed “Rosa Mundi” named after Jane Clifford “Fair Rosamund”, the mistress of King Henry II back in the 12th Century. It was thought that Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine, Henry’s wife, had Rosamund killed in a fit of jealousy but this has never been totally proved...

great find ::g ::g ::g ::g

I'm afraid not. I can't read the last part of the matrix but the piece I can read is as follows: S' hENRICI D'WED....

The 'D' is an abbreviated 'de', as in 'de Grey'. So part of the surname.
God gives all men all earth to love, but since man’s heart is small,
Ordains for each one spot shall prove beloved over all.
Each to his choice, and I rejoice, the lot has fallen to me
In a fair ground—in a fair ground—Yea, Sussex by the sea!

could it be BIS as in bishop...so belonged Bishop HENRY seal for his documents just a last thing that came in into my mind if you read it from "B"..ive been looking at names but keep coming up with nothing for D'wed and however as its similar to the French seal i posted .this one Image
Date from: AD 1250
Date to: AD 1400

perhaps then its a French bishop we are looking for of that period
