Gold coin for ID please : Indian ? (Solved)

Post by Dave8472 » Wed May 15, 2019 3:11 pm

Hi all, an interesting couple of hours out on pasture, found this gold cufflink. It looks to have once been a gold coin, or a copy of one, rather crudely soldered on the back.

The closest coin I can find is a ¼ Mohur - George V [Umaid Singh] ?

Diameter 15.46mm 3.39g (including links)

Any ideas on this interesting find please

Ooh nice find! Go back and find the other half! (Too much to ask that he would have lost the pair...)

Can't help with id I'm afraid. Any Indian military links in your area? When Oxgirl posted hers I recall the theory was that it had been brought home (and lost) by a soldier who'd served in India...

Cheers

Thanks, its a high trash area so will be back another day for a wider scan ::g .

This site is multi-period but with a heavy bias to the first world war. Lots of French, Prussian military buttons and general George V era coins. I have had some commonwealth and foreign coins here, but never anything Indian before.

Stunning find Dave.

I was in Jodhpur back in November, they have a massive Indian hill fort called the Mehrangarh Fort, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mehrangar ... h_Fort.jpg

I can just imagine your coin starting its life there and ending up on this forum. Small world hey !

Brilliant find ::g

That’s what I love about this hobby, the finds can be so varied and you just don’t know what is going to turn up, I love the research to. I had Googled the place where it had been minted
