Off to a Flying Start - Now Added Gold to the Year/Decade

Post by fred » Mon Jan 06, 2020 7:49 pm

My post yesterday viewtopic.php?f=121&t=117589 covered most of the targets needed to start the year in a fit and proper way with one important exception - gold!

After restarting my epic house decoration this morning I lasted about two hours before I was bored of sugar soap and sponges. Fortunately low tide was convenient timed to provide an afternoons entertainment.

The beach was large flat and mostly empty as people tried to avoid being sand blasted. There was a detectorist coming off as I arrived but he wasn't in a talkative mood, probably too busy chewing sand. I don't worry about competition anyway as most of the time I am after targets that are far deeper than they can reach.

It didn't look very promising but I immediately headed out onto the sand and failed to find anything for the first hour except a sigle Euro cent. Eventually I reached the place where I found a gold and a silver ring before Christmas. Unfortunately there was nothing left of the cuts but I did get a couple of pound coins and a 20p in the general area. As I was about to give up I noticed a line of exposed pebbles about half a mile away and wandered over to them.

There were signals everywhere but most of them turned out to be bullets and shrapnel. Eventually I ended up in the water flicking bullets onto the sand with my spade and soaking myself in the process. As I heaved another target ashore I saw the unmistakable glint of gold and the edge of a gold pendant was left sticking out of the black sand. I initially assumed that it was a St Christoper, which I find several of each year, but then realised that it contained a soveregn sized coin. I was a bit puzzled as I know how coins feel and it should have been heavier if it was a sovereign. Closer inspection revealed it to be an Edward Windsor medal so into the pocket it went. Another half an hour threw up little else of note and I headed off sharpish to try and avoid getting a parking ticket. A brief look at the medal revealed that it wasn't Edward Windsor but Edward Whymper and the medal commemorated the 100th anniversary of the first ascent of the Matterhorn. The Medal seems to be 900 gold, a common continental standard, and weighs 3.5 grams and the nicely hallmarked frame is another couple of grams of 18 carat.

A good start to the new year gold anyway. Shame that I am busy for the rest of the week so that enticing cut will have to lie there awaiting some other traveller. :D

At the rate they appeared to fall off I'd think that if they called themselves mountain climbers nowadays they'd stand a good chance of falling foul of the Trades Descriptions Act. :D

I bet someone was pig sick at loosing that one Fred. It’s certainly a bit different and a great find in difficult conditions.

Think you’ve earned a few Brownie points but maybe not as many as you will when you finish that decorating :D

That will be a glorious day indeed although even should I live to be a hundred I'm not expecting to live long enough to actually see it. The days will lengthen soon and the beach and fields will weave their magic spells and, for me, all will be lost. :D

That is really nice, better than just another gold ring I assume :) I've ordered my Nox 800 now, mainly for the wet beach and to find the gold. Do you have any advice on setting for the wet? I've been watching some beach hunt videos but no info on settings, I think most are just throwing it into beach 2 and swinging away.

I'll likely be hitting the beach the day it arrives to give it a test, so any set up help appreciated ::g
