More Silver, Some Gold and Coins Everywhere plus a Hammy Bonus

Post by fred » Mon Nov 04, 2019 10:21 pm

The recent weather has blown some of the beaches around a bit. Yesterday I was due to attend a JoanAllenEvents dig nearby but I got up at the crack of dawn to put in an hour and a half on the beach. I found loads of coins and other bits plus the silver coins and part of a 15ct gold ring shown in the first photo.

At 8.15 I set off for the dig expecting to be just a little late for the 8.30 start. After nearly an hour spent exploring Romney Marsh, an area that I thought that I knew well, I finally stumbled onto the dig. Along the way I had seen loads of herons and other wildlife including my first ever Great White Egret (which I initially though was an oversized albino heron :D ). Anyway to my horror the dig was on a piece of land that I knew to have been well detected in the past and which I hadn't previously had much luck on. Had I known I probably wouldn't have gone and I would have missed out on a couple of reasonable enough hammies, several other reasonable finds and some great company.

This morning I again got up with the dawn and detected for about six hours minus a bit of time spent sheltering from showers. Once again I found plenty of coins and bits (photo 2) including the silver, a small 9ct gold ring and a silver Salvation Army badge, all shown in the third photo. I found just under 200 coins and the total in spending money was £46.39p. The greatest surprise was a Charles II farthing in almost reasonable nick. All told not a bad weekend at all. ::g

We’ve been reminded recently not to swear so all I’ll say is, my goodness me what a lot of finds. :D

I just can’t understand how there are so many coins on the beaches over your side of the country and, apparently, so few over on my side. Does it speak to the wealth of the population over there or is it more a case of peeps in Wales being tighter than, you know what, with their money !

Great week-ends finds there Fred. Well found. Bet you knew about it this morning though. Carry on like that and you’ll have muscles like Arnie ::g

Hi Fred,
My friend “rode past a load of people in a field with detectors, in bilsington”.
Was that you lot?

Nice finds by the way.

Not us. A chap organises charity digs for relatively small groups in that area so it may well have been one of his events. We were somewhere behind Brenzett. ::g

Nice going Fred... a lovely selection there. I've still never found a gold ring! Earrings, necklaces, and a bracelet, but the only rings I've found have been cheapo dress rings. Maybe because I don't 'do' beaches? I did find a brass nut that had been smoothed out inside and only leaving two of the angled faces on the outside with two sets of initials ('trench-art(y)' sort of sweetheart thing, but never a gold one. I think you've cornered the market in these mate! ::g

My best day ever was about 300 coins and I've nearly hit £100 in cash on several occasions. That certainly ain't normal though, the average is about 37p (well perhaps not quite :D ) ::g

It depends where you were really. I knew where had been productive in the past and, despite arriving very late indeed, I got my first hammy very quickly. I then got odds and sods over the next several hours, along with some fairly hefty gaps, and then got another hammered at the end not so very far from the first one. What surprised me was the number of hammies that came off of the big field opposite the registration tent because that seemed absolutely bare last time that I detected it. :D
