My first ask for permission and get 700 acres

Post by Simonwwfc26 » Thu Oct 05, 2017 8:08 pm

Only just started as a newbie detecting my new 400i Garrett arrived today due to my job I get to travel all around chilterns , Bedfordshire , Herts etc on my first delivery today took me to Buckinghamshire/ Milton Keynes area onto a farm so I thought I'd ask nicely and thought if u don't ask you won't find out . So I popped the question and the farmer said yes no problem just ring when your coming I thought bloody hell :)) :)) :)) I then said how much land have you got his reply was 700 acres so this will give me something to learn on

Great news, and even better if land research reveals anything interesting! ::g

Nice one Simon, lets hope that there's some nice history there :D

Our new permission a couple of weeks ago produced two "life-time" finds ::g

Hello 'Simonwwfc'::g Your farmer would seem to be a very accommodating chap. Such land-owners' are rarely found on the 'first ask' so well done and look after him in all respects ::g ::g

As you're very new to the hobby, it's a good idea mention in conversation, that as a responsible detectorist (and I'm sure you are) you follow the requirements of the 'Code of Conduct when on his land and have the necessary Third Party Insurance cover as provided by the FID/NCMD.

Here's wishing you success and Good Luck in your detecting endeavours ::g ::g Regards ss47

Thanks guys & girls ::g
Is there any way I can do any research into the land ?
I've tried looking on old maps app but not really sure on how it works or just get on the land with the detector and search it thanks again

You could spend hours researching...or hours searching....... ;)

1. Get your farmer to outline his land on an Ordance Survey map & check there aren`t any "no go areas" (anything from Scheduled Ancient Monuments to game cover for shooting etc).
2. Check with him when you can go on, some will say after harvest and then stop once its seeded (drilled) that varies farmer to farmer.
3. Look for footpaths between villages, high ground, water. The basics that people need to live.
4. Go detecting, take the scrap out, leave your holes tidy.
5. Show the landowner what you have found when it is convenient for them. If they want to keep anything remember all finds are their property.

Be aware of "Treasure" https://finds.org.uk/treasure

Enjoy being out in the countryside in the fresh air. ::g

You could try some of this for your research...

Check here to check if your land has Scheduled Monuments areas on it etc:
https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/ ... sults=True

Here's a good link for your old maps (if they are pre-1830's I generally find them not of much use tbh), although you could pop to your main county museum and have a look at the old tithe maps (pay a fee and they'll probably let you take photos of them for your own research purposes):
http://www.oldmapsonline.org/

Google Earth on your pc (if you have one) is good as you can look at aerial photos of the land, and then spin the clock back and look at other years (usually back to 1945), and look at the different crop markings.

Make your own maps! :) Plot what you find and where, and patterns may emerge, suggesting possible old track ways or trading spots. This might help:

Good luck!

BD ::g

Edit:
If you are really keen, you could also have a look at some Lidar maps of the land too :D
