Is it a good permission

Post by Ryanlewis55 » Tue Sep 12, 2017 9:29 pm

Hello, new to dectecting but finally sorted my detector out and my fort bit of permission is 2 fields away from what I can find out via internet is 2 fields away from where a roman gold hoard was found 20 years ago would you class this as a good field to detect in or do I need to try and get the permission where the hoard was found ?

A good permission is any land where you have agreement to detect in! There is always a better field next door, over the hill, etc. The problem is you can't always tell which one it will be x;

I have one field with incredible documented history, amazing field markings and is undetected. But is there much I've found there? No! Then I got a small little field that didn't look that interesting and has been my best permission so far.

My point is get going on what you have and use that to build trust and a good reputation with your current permission. That will get you other fields. Of course you should keep trying to find more permissions, as all fields are undetectable at some point, so you have choice. But don't constantly look over your shoulder (or hedges) wishing you were detecting next door instead of where you are. Every field has the potential to be great, enjoy the fact you are lucky enough to have one ::g

Things turn up where you least expect so give them a lash and enjoy! I've recently returned to a field I found absolutely nothing in several trips, and I've now hit a good run and had several good finds!

Never give up and happy hunting ::g

"Is it a good permission"

One of my permissions seemed a but under par. It had been worked by a very competent detectorist for many years. On the off-chance I went around the edges and low and behold, a gold posy ring with a previously unrecorded inscription.

To echo the sentiments expressed here already, they're all good!

No it isn't. Just tell us where it is and someone else can nip round and save you the time....

Just joking of course. But I hope you realize the point of all this metal detecting is to find stuff that nobody else has...yet.
