How to find out if my permission might be a protected site?
Hi, I've been given permission to detect land, but, it seems too good. All around have been archeological digs and it's in or at least very close to quite a hot spot of archeological finds.
I don't want to get into trouble so whom should I contact or is there a site I can look up?
Thanks in advance.

Go to this website: https://magic.defra.gov.uk/
Zoom in to the location.
On the left hand menu select Designations.
Then Historic Statutory
Then Scheduled monuments.
That creates a "layer" on the map, if it goes orange stripes its a "No Go".

Thank you!
I remember a site like that but couldn't find it.
Thanks again.

An example of a SAM on one of my permissions, can detect around it but there are mostly natural boundaries like hedges etc.

Aww, cut me some slack
I meant it was sure to be designated. I got so up about it and then thought I can't be allowed surely.
But.... It's right on the boarder of the orange area!!!!
It's only a small field but horray!
To boot, it's around the corner from where I work.
Very stoked.
Thank you

Re: How to find out if my permission might be a protected site?
Well I visited it this morning, it's within an area where there are gates and security cameras. They open the gates at 7am so I got in before work.
It's actually larger than I thought.
It's overgrown to chest height though! I was detecting the few clear areas, very trashy, but I can handle that.
When I was detecting a horse popped his head over the undergrowth and gave me a heart attack!!!
Turns out he's a lovely old boy and we got on.
2 hours of detecting, got a musket ball, what could be a strap end a tiny piece of lead with a pattern on it. Also loads of modern assorted scrap.
The soil differs a lot and there are less scrappy area's. There is an unusual circular dip that has oxy daisy's growing in it. Didn't have the heart to trample it as it was quite pretty.
Spoke to the land owner afterwards and he says he is going to clear the bramble and cut the weeds.
Can't really access it as I could only detect such a small area.
The field next to it there was a dig for a Roman villa so I'm willing to put up with the trash. Have yet to find a Roman coin as none of my previous permissions had much Roman activity.
Thanks Jcmaloney, much appreciated for pointing the magic maps to me.

Went again this morning, wrestled with bramble, thistle and lots of junk.
It paid off!
My first Roman coin. It wasn't that deep either. Also found a rolled up piece of lead, alas no curse inside.

Can someone clarify, with scheduled monuments can you go to the boundary of it or is it best to give extra space? I had read that you should give a further 20 meters just to be sure or isn't that required?
And nice roman "jealous" I got my hammered now I want a roman lol

I think you are allowed to go up to the boundary, but I only think that which doesn't make it fact.andy1973 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 13, 2019 12:42 pmCan someone clarify, with scheduled monuments can you go to the boundary of it or is it best to give extra space? The border to my permission has quite a thick and broad band of trees, so I feel there is a good distance.
But they set the boundary, so I assume that is the boundary. If they feel it should be extended to protect their site I would assume they would.
