Don`t discriminate anything. You have a multi-frequency & multi-tone machine why turn parts of it off? Once you know what the different metals sound like you are most of the way there. ::g

The other thing is any discrimination causes the machine to "null" for a brief period of time, that could equally become a missed target. ::g

No discrimination means you get to understand the area you are searching both in terms of mineralisation & human activity.

There is no quick fix to learning a machine, there are no magic programmes the most important part is the nut on the handle!!

The "Nulling" is quite an eye opener.
Fully open on all metal for me 98;

The only reason I see is that a 40 signal will almost certainly be a lump of rusty iron, I used to run in all metal with just minus 10 notched out now when I use the safari I do as the others have said and run with no discrimination at all.

If you " notch out " anything on the Minelab machines it slows down the seperation and with the " nulling " you can and will miss a good target.
Use full open screen no discrimination, it is the only way to use the FBS machines regardless of model.

A while back I got a strong signal at 40 on dry sand and initially decide that it would be a lump of rusty iron but it turned out to be a heart shaped locket made of that shiny metal that you often see asian and indian objects made of. After some cleaning and lubrication of the hinge, I managed to open it and inside was a small scrap of paper wrapped in polythene. The Arabic writing on the paper turned out to be something of a puzzle.

On an other occasion, whilst detecting a large hump of sand, the Safari went into overload. Once again I thought it would be a large lump of iron but it turned out to be the back half of a silver cigaret case!

Good luck and happy hunting ::g
